Should we buy probiotics for ADHD?

Bottom line

Interesting microbiome biology is not symptom proof. Current randomized trials do not show clear ADHD symptom benefit versus placebo. Current evidence does not support probiotics as a treatment for ADHD symptoms.

What the question usually mixes up

Probiotics arrive with a modern story: gut-brain signaling, inflammation, personalized strains. The ADHD treatment question is simpler: do placebo-controlled trials show symptom benefit?

Research continues because microbiome biology is genuinely interesting. Treatment claims, however, have to follow clinical outcomes rather than biological plausibility alone.

So far, the best synthesis of randomized trials does not show a clear ADHD symptom benefit.

What the trials roughly show

A 2024 review of randomized placebo-controlled trials in children and adolescents found no clear benefit for total symptoms, inattention, or hyperactivity/impulsivity. Hints involving multi-strain products or add-on use with stimulants remain hypotheses for future trials, not reasons to shop now.

What still makes sense

A probiotic prescribed for a separate GI indication is a different decision from buying one to treat ADHD. Future large, well-designed trials could change this conclusion. They have not yet.

Do not spend first on probiotics for ADHD symptoms. Put that money and attention toward options with stronger evidence.
