If you are here because ADHD just got real for you or someone you love: you are in the right place.
ADHD: what lifestyle and nutrition evidence actually supports
Behavior and skills training come first, and the best path is different for children and adults. Fix sleep when sleep is a problem. Exercise is worth doing. Nutrition matters, but it is not one single therapy. Some popular wellness products are not backed by good evidence.
This page maps the lifestyle and nutrition options. It does not rank the established first-line ADHD treatments, which are medication and structured behavioral or psychological therapy. This is not personal medical advice and not a plan to start or stop medication. Use it to have a better conversation with your clinician.

Children and adults do not start in the same place. That’s where the questions below begin.

Two doorways. Pick the path that matches you.
These are not two options to compare. They are two different starting points.
Worth doing
Sleep · Exercise
Nutrition
Many claims. Different strengths. Scan, then open one.
- Is fish oil / omega-3 worth buying? Optional · small average effect · not decisive
- Should we try a strict elimination diet? Only as a supervised, high-burden option · not routine first-line care
- Do artificial food colors matter? Small effect · may matter more for some children
- Will cutting sugar treat ADHD? No · not ADHD treatment
- Do “healthy eating” patterns treat ADHD? Good for general health · thin as ADHD treatment proof
- What about specialized multi-nutrient formulas? A few studied formulas show some benefit in certain studies · not the same as a drugstore multivitamin
- What if iron or zinc is low? Treat documented deficiency as medical care · not an ADHD stack by itself
Maybe, with modest expectations
Optional. Not first-line.
Special cases
Narrow claims. Read the fine print.
Not where I’d spend first
Visible so you don’t have to wonder. Quiet on purpose.
Every question in this index now has a written answer. The grouping stays complete so you can compare what deserves attention, what is optional, and what is unlikely to be worth the cost.
