Eating patterns, saturated fat, and soluble fiber
This page covers three diet questions that get mixed up online: Portfolio-style eating for LDL, cutting saturated fat for events, and soluble fiber alone for LDL. They are related. They are not one slogan. Plant sterols have their own page.

Eating patterns stay on the map with three lines that must not collapse. A Portfolio-style pattern lowers LDL-C by about 17% / −0.73 mmol/L with high-certainty lipid improvements but without a hard-event package. Reducing saturated fat reduces combined CVD events (relative risk about 0.79, moderate certainty) without clear all-cause or CVD mortality benefit. Soluble fiber alone can lower LDL on the order of about 0.25–0.33 mmol/L without hard-outcome proof from this package, and that question isn't answered by noting that Portfolio includes viscous fiber. What it is
Food-pattern and food-tool changes people use for lipids and cardiovascular risk. On this map that means:
1. Portfolio-style patterns (nuts, plant protein, viscous fiber, and plant sterols used together as a pattern).
2. Reducing saturated fat, often by replacing it with other fats or foods.
3. Soluble or viscous fiber alone (psyllium, oat β-glucan, and neighbors), asked as its own tool.
What taking part usually involves
Changing shopping and cooking habits over weeks to months. Portfolio-style eating asks for several food components at once, which is a real adherence burden. Fiber tools may mean food sources, a supplement powder, or both. This page does not prescribe a meal plan.
What it is commonly confused with
“Heart-healthy eating is one thing.” “Portfolio lowers LDL, so it prevents heart attacks.” “Cutting saturated fat clearly saves lives.” “If Portfolio includes viscous fiber, the fiber-alone question is already answered.” “Plant sterols are the same as Portfolio.”
What the evidence shows
Three lines stay separate.
Portfolio-style pattern: In the review used here, the pattern lowers LDL-C by about 17%, or about −0.73 mmol/L, with high-certainty lipid and risk-factor improvements. That is not a hard-event package from Portfolio alone.
Saturated fat: Reducing saturated fat reduces combined cardiovascular disease events (relative risk about 0.79, moderate certainty) without clear all-cause or CVD mortality benefit in the Cochrane package used here. Event benefit without mortality certainty is still useful information. It is not identical to Portfolio or to fiber alone.
Soluble / viscous fiber alone: Psyllium, oat β-glucan, and related tools show working LDL lowering on the order of about 0.25–0.33 mmol/L in meta-analytic signals. That's lipid-panel change, not hard-outcome proof from this package. Portfolio’s viscous-fiber ingredient doesn't answer the person who only wants to know about fiber.
Plant sterols remain a separate page. Unstudied regional or plant-based patterns do not inherit Portfolio evidence by resemblance.
Who was studied, expectations, and limits
Population and context studied: adults in Portfolio lipid trials and reviews, saturated-fat reduction trials with cardiovascular outcomes, and fiber meta-analyses focused mainly on LDL change.
That is the research setting, not a meal prescription.
Realistic expectation: diet tools can move lipids, and saturated-fat reduction has moderate-certainty event benefit without clear mortality certainty. Limits: Portfolio and fiber alone do not bring hard-event packages on this map; fiber is not a silent Portfolio footnote; plant sterols are elsewhere; diet does not erase indicated medicines.
