Intervention Maps Rheumatoid Arthritis

If you're trying to understand your options for rheumatoid arthritis, including after several treatments haven't helped enough, you're in the right place.

Rheumatoid arthritis: where each option sits in the evidence

Some rheumatoid arthritis treatments target the disease itself. Others help with symptoms, movement, or day-to-day function. This map shows where each option fits, what it can realistically do, and where the evidence becomes less certain.

Use this map to understand the options and prepare better questions for your rheumatology team. It isn't a guide to starting, stopping, or changing medication on your own.

The evidence landscape

See the different roles these options play. Not a menu. A landscape.

Treatments that control the underlying inflammatory disease and help prevent joint damage are called disease-modifying treatments. That's why they form the foundation of this map. Osteoarthritis and other kinds of arthritis are separate maps.

Each question below has enough evidence or clinical relevance to examine. That doesn't mean every option works equally well, or does the same job.

Helping while treatment takes effect

Can help control symptoms while longer-term treatment takes effect, but usually isn't meant to become the long-term plan.
